Garage Door Opener Buying Guide

How to choose a garage door opener: drive type, motor size, noise, features, safety and installation.

Start with the door

An opener should never be asked to lift the full weight of an unbalanced door. Before you buy, check that the door is balanced and the springs are healthy. A door that is hard to lift by hand needs repair first.

We test balance at every visit, and we fix springs before we mount a new opener.

A new opener on a bad door will wear out quickly.

If your door feels heavy or the opener strains, the first fix is usually the springs, not a bigger motor. A new opener on a heavy door is a short-lived answer, and balance repairs often cost less than an opener.

Drive types

Belt drives are quiet and smooth. Chain drives are sturdy and louder. Screw drives have few moving parts. Wall-mount, or jackshaft, openers sit beside the door shaft and leave the ceiling clear.

Belt and wall-mount openers suit attached garages, and chain drives suit workshops.

Our opener drive comparison explains each type in detail.

Think about noise in terms of where people sleep and gather. A garage under a bedroom or next to a family room benefits from a belt or wall-mount drive, while a detached workshop is fine with a chain.

Motor power

Heavier doors, such as insulated or wood doors, need a stronger motor. A weak motor strains and fails sooner, while an oversized motor adds cost you do not need.

We size the motor to the door weight and how often it is used.

DC motors offer soft start and stop and are often quieter.

If you are not sure what motor size you need, describe the door. Material, size and insulation all change the weight, and we choose the motor on that basis rather than on a headline number.

Features

Wi-Fi control, battery backup, built-in lights, keypads and smart alerts are common. Think about which ones you will really use. A battery backup is useful in storms, and smart alerts are helpful for busy families.

More features can mean more to learn, so choose what fits.

Ask how the opener handles power outages and how to use the manual release.

Do not buy features you will not use. A simple opener that works well is better than a complicated one that frustrates you, and a good installation matters more than an extra feature.

Safety

Modern openers have photo-eye sensors and an auto-reverse feature. They are there to protect people and pets. Never bypass them, and test them regularly.

We aim the sensors, set the force and test the reverse during installation.

If your opener does not reverse, stop using it and call us.

Test the safety features every few months. Waving an object through the photo-eye beam and placing a block of wood on the floor take under a minute, and they confirm that the opener still protects people and pets.

Installation

A good installation fastens the opener to solid framing, wires the sensors and wall control properly and sets the travel limits. Poor installation causes noise, slipping and uneven closing.

You need an outlet near the opener, and a qualified electrician should handle new wiring.

We program remotes and keypads and explain how everything works before we leave.

Keep your paperwork. The model number, the remotes you have and the programming steps are handy when you need a new remote or when a family member needs access to the garage.

Our advice in one sentence

Fix the door first, match the motor to its weight and choose the drive type that suits where your garage sits.
