What smart control gives you
A smart opener or controller connects to your home Wi-Fi so you can open, close and check the door from a phone. You can get an alert if the door is left open, close it from the driveway, set a schedule and share access with family or a guest.
For busy households, it removes a worry and saves trips back to the house.
Some systems also link to cameras, locks and voice assistants.
If you share the home with others, agree who has access and how alerts are used. A shared alert that goes to the whole family can reduce missed notifications and open doors at night.
Opener or add-on
Some openers have Wi-Fi built in, and many older openers can add a small smart controller. A controller does not replace the opener, it adds smart control to it. Check whether your opener model works with the controller you want.
A new smart opener also gives you modern safety features and often quieter running.
We help you choose between the two paths.
Choose a controller that is made to work with your opener, and read the compatibility list before you buy. If you are unsure, send us the model number and we will check it before you spend any money.
Check your Wi-Fi
A smart device only works as well as its signal. Garages are often at the edge of the house, and the signal can be weak. Test your phone at the opener, and consider a mesh extender if the signal drops.
A strong signal makes alerts timely and control reliable.
We test the signal during setup.
If the signal is weak, try moving the router, adding an extender or using a mesh system. A small change can make the difference between an app that works and one that disappoints.
Alerts, schedules and guests
Set an alert for a door left open after a set time, schedule an evening close and give family members their own access. Guest access can be temporary, so a visitor or service person can get in without a remote.
Review who has access from time to time and remove people who no longer need it.
Keep your own notifications turned on.
Be thoughtful with guest access. Temporary codes are handy for visitors, and they are easy to remove when the visit is over. Review the list every few months and clear anything you no longer need.
Security basics
Use a strong, unique password and turn on any extra sign-in protection offered. Keep the app and the opener firmware updated. Be careful about sharing access, and remove old remotes and keypad codes.
Modern rolling-code remotes are far more secure than older fixed-code ones.
If you lose a remote, we can erase it and program new ones.
If you sell the home or a tenant moves out, reset the codes and remove old accounts. A short checklist at the change of ownership keeps the garage secure and avoids confusion for the next person.
When the internet is down
Remotes, keypads and wall controls keep working when the internet fails. The app needs a connection, and a battery backup keeps the opener moving in a power outage.
Know where the manual release is and how to use it safely.
A smart garage is a convenience on top of a door that still works the normal way.
A smart system is most useful when it sits on top of a healthy door. A door that is balanced, lubricated and sealed gives the opener an easy job, and the app then becomes a convenience instead of a repair tool.
Check compatibility and Wi-Fi first, use strong passwords and keep the regular remotes and manual release working too.
